Safety and Side Effects of TMS Therapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is an innovative, FDA-cleared treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and an adjunct therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Viking Psychiatry proudly offers NeuroStar TMS therapy, a trusted system with a strong safety profile and proven efficacy.

Like any medical treatment, TMS therapy has both benefits and potential risks. Below, we discuss the safety and side effects of NeuroStar TMS therapy and how Viking Psychiatry prioritizes patient well-being.

What Is TMS Therapy?

TMS therapy uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. At Viking Psychiatry, we use the FDA-cleared NeuroStar TMS Therapy system, which adheres to advanced safety protocols.

TMS therapy does not cause systemic side effects of medications, such as weight gain, fatigue, or sexual dysfunction. This makes it an appealing option for individuals seeking an alternative or complementary approach to managing MDD or other mental health conditions. Understanding both the benefits and potential side effects of TMS therapy is essential when considering this treatment.

Is TMS Therapy Safe?

Numerous clinical studies have evaluated the safety and efficacy of TMS therapy. NeuroStar TMS therapy has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2008 and meets strict safety standards.

TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that does not require surgery or sedation. The NeuroStar system delivers precise magnetic pulses to the targeted brain region while minimizing exposure to surrounding areas. Our trained professionals administer and monitor each session to ensure patient safety and comfort.

Side Effects of TMS Therapy

While TMS therapy is generally well-tolerated, it is important to understand potential side effects. Most side effects of NeuroStar TMS therapy are mild and temporary. Common side effects include:

  • Mild scalp discomfort or headaches during or after treatment, which typically lessen after a few sessions
  • Brief, mild muscle contractions in the scalp or face due to the magnetic pulses
  • Occasional lightheadedness following treatment, which resolves quickly

These side effects usually fade on their own without requiring additional intervention. To enhance comfort, our team can adjust TMS intensity during sessions.

Less common side effects include:

  • A very rare risk of seizures (less than 0.1%), which is lower than the seizure risk associated with many antidepressants
  • Temporary sensitivity to sound or mild ear discomfort due to the clicking noise of the device. We provide ear protection to minimize this effect
  • In patients with bipolar disorder, there is a potential risk of inducing manic episodes if they are not on a mood-stabilizing medication

Before beginning NeuroStar TMS therapy, our specialists conduct a thorough evaluation of each patient’s medical and mental health history to minimize risks and ensure the safest treatment approach.

Who Is TMS Therapy Not Recommended For?

While most people can benefit from TMS therapy, some are not ideal candidates. Our specialists perform thorough assessments, including considering overall safety and side effects, to determine if TMS therapy is right for each patient. TMS therapy is not recommended for patients with the following conditions:

  • Individuals with metal implants in or near the head
  • Patients with a history of seizures
  • People with unstable medical conditions
  • Individuals taking medications that lower their seizure threshold
